You are responsible for:
- Protecting your password and authentication credentials.
- Preventing unauthorised access to your account.
- Keeping your email address current.

5. Trial Licence
Paper Bark may provide a free trial for the duration displayed during registration or activation.
Unless otherwise stated, a trial:
- Is provided for evaluation purposes.
- May include limited features or usage.
- May require an internet connection for activation or verification.
- Expires automatically at the end of the stated trial period.
- Does not guarantee continued access to paid features after expiry.
- Has no cash value and cannot be exchanged for money.
Where a payment method is required and a trial automatically converts into a paid subscription, the price, renewal frequency and cancellation conditions must be displayed before the user begins the trial.
6. Software Licence
Subject to payment, these Terms and the conditions of your selected plan, Paper Bark grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable licence to install and use the software.
The licence allows use:
- For personal, educational or professional screenwriting purposes.
- On the number of devices permitted by the purchased plan.
- During the applicable trial, monthly, yearly or other licence period.
- In accordance with these Terms.
The software is licensed, not sold. Purchasing a licence does not transfer ownership of Paper Bark, its source code, trademarks, interface, documentation or other intellectual property.
7. Licence Restrictions
Except where applicable law expressly permits otherwise, you must not:
- Copy or distribute the software outside the rights granted by your plan.
- Sell, sublicense, rent, lease or commercially redistribute Paper Bark.
- Share, publish or resell licence keys or activation credentials.

- Use automated systems to disrupt, overload or misuse Paper Bark services.
- Introduce malware, malicious code or unauthorised access mechanisms.
- Use the software in a way that violates applicable law or third-party rights.
- Impersonate another person or provide false account or payment information.
Nothing in this section restricts rights that cannot legally be excluded, including any limited reverse-engineering or interoperability rights granted by mandatory law.
8. Monthly and Yearly Plans
Paper Bark may offer monthly, yearly or other fixed-term licences.
The applicable price, currency, taxes, licence duration and renewal conditions will be displayed before purchase.
Recurring subscriptions
Where a plan is described as recurring or automatically renewing:
- It will renew for the stated billing period unless cancelled before renewal.
- The applicable payment method may be charged automatically.
- The renewal price will be the price communicated before renewal.
- Users may cancel through the available account, billing or support process.
- Cancellation normally takes effect at the end of the current paid period.
Fixed-term licences
Where a licence is described as fixed-term and non-renewing, it will expire at the end of the purchased period unless the user purchases or activates another licence.
Cancelling a subscription does not automatically entitle the user to a refund for the current billing period. Refund eligibility is governed by the Refund and Returns Policy and applicable consumer law.
9. Prices, Taxes and Payment
Prices are displayed on the Paper Bark website or checkout page.
Unless stated otherwise:
- Prices include or exclude taxes as indicated during checkout.
- Payment must be completed using an accepted payment method.
- The user authorises the payment provider to process the transaction.
- Access may be withheld until payment is successfully confirmed.
- Currency-conversion or bank charges imposed by third parties are the user’s responsibility.
We may use third-party payment processors. Paper Bark may not directly receive or store complete payment-card details where payment is handled by those providers.
If a payment is declined, reversed, refunded or subject to a chargeback, we may suspend the related licence while the matter is investigated.
10. Licence Activation and Verification
Paper Bark may require an internet connection when:
- Activating a trial or paid licence.
- Signing in.
- Verifying licence validity.
- Synchronising projects.
- Restoring cloud backups.
- Downloading updates.
- Accessing online account services.
The application may also check locally stored licence information and the system date while offline.
Users must not manipulate the device clock, application data, licence files or system configuration to bypass licence expiry or verification.
When a licence expires, access to paid features may be restricted and the application may ask the user to renew or reactivate the licence.
11. Local Project Storage
Paper Bark is designed to store screenplay projects locally on the user’s device.
You remain responsible for:
- Maintaining access to your computer.
- Protecting the device against loss, damage or unauthorised access.
- Maintaining appropriate local backups.
- Exporting important projects where necessary.
- Ensuring sufficient storage space.
- Keeping your operating system and security software appropriately maintained.
Uninstalling Paper Bark, resetting the device, deleting application folders, replacing hardware or modifying system files may affect locally stored projects.
Paper Bark does not take ownership of locally stored screenplay content.
12. Cloud Synchronisation and Backup
Paper Bark may allow users to synchronise selected projects with cloud storage.
Cloud synchronisation is intended as an additional convenience and recovery feature. It does not replace the user’s responsibility to maintain appropriate local or external backups.
Cloud synchronisation may require:
- An active account.
- A valid licence.
- An internet connection.
- Sufficient available cloud-storage capacity.
- Manual selection of a sync command or enabled synchronisation setting.
- A compatible application version.
Users should confirm that synchronisation has completed successfully before deleting local files or changing devices.
We will take reasonable measures to operate cloud services securely and reliably, but no storage or transmission system can guarantee uninterrupted availability or absolute protection against every possible loss or security incident.
Mandatory legal rights relating to digital services remain unaffected.
13. Project Restoration
Eligible projects that have previously been successfully synchronised may be available for restoration.
Restoration may not be possible where:
- The project was never successfully synchronised.
- Synchronisation was interrupted or incomplete.
- The project falls outside the applicable retention period.
- The account or cloud data has been permanently deleted.
- The user cannot access or verify the relevant account.
- The local or cloud file was corrupted for reasons outside our reasonable control.
- The applicable plan does not include restoration.
The applicable cloud-storage and deletion-retention periods should be described in the Privacy Policy, account interface or product documentation.
Users should export and separately back up important screenplay projects.
14. User Content and Screenplay Ownership
You retain ownership of the screenplays, project files, characters, dialogue, story ideas and other original material you create or import into Paper Bark.
Paper Bark does not acquire ownership of your creative work merely because you use the software or synchronise a project.
When you use cloud features, you grant us a limited permission to host, copy, transmit, process and technically reproduce the relevant data only as necessary to:
- Provide cloud synchronisation and restoration.
- Maintain service reliability and security.
- Provide requested support.
- Comply with applicable legal obligations.
This permission ends when the content is deleted from our systems, subject to reasonable backup cycles and legally required retention.
You are responsible for ensuring that content uploaded or synchronised by you does not infringe copyright, privacy, confidentiality or other third-party rights.
15. Privacy and Data Protection
Personal data is processed according to the Paper Bark Privacy Policy and applicable data-protection law.
The Privacy Policy should explain:
- What information is collected.
- Why it is processed.
- The legal basis for processing.
- How long it is retained.
- Which service providers receive it.
- Where it is stored or transferred.
- The rights available to users.
- How users can contact Paper Bark regarding privacy.
Acceptance of these Terms does not constitute consent to optional marketing communications. Marketing consent, where required, should be obtained separately.
16. Software Updates
We may provide updates, patches, security improvements, compatibility changes and new versions.
Some updates may be necessary to:
- Maintain security.
- Continue licence verification.
- Support current operating systems.
- Correct defects.
- Maintain compatibility with cloud services.
- Meet legal or technical requirements.
Users should install required updates within a reasonable period.
An older version may stop connecting to online services where continued support would create security, compatibility or operational problems.
We will not intentionally remove purchased core functionality during an active paid period without a legitimate reason, reasonable notice where practicable and any remedy required by law.
17. System Requirements and Compatibility
Users are responsible for reviewing the published system requirements before purchasing or installing Paper Bark.
Compatibility may depend on:
- Operating system and version.
- Device architecture.
- Available memory and storage.
- Internet connectivity.
- Security settings.
- Third-party software.
- Administrative installation permissions.
We may stop supporting outdated operating systems where continued support is no longer technically or securely reasonable.
Where a compatibility limitation was clearly disclosed before purchase, it may affect refund eligibility, subject to mandatory consumer rights.
18. Availability and Maintenance
We aim to keep Paper Bark and its online services reasonably available.
However, access may occasionally be interrupted because of:
- Planned maintenance.
- Software updates.
- Security incidents.
- Hosting or internet failures.
- Payment-provider outages.
- Events outside our reasonable control.
Where reasonably possible, we will try to minimise disruption and provide notice of significant planned maintenance.
This section does not exclude liability or remedies that cannot be excluded under applicable law.
19. Technical Support
Support may be available through:
Email: info@paperbark.eu
When requesting support, users may be asked to provide:
- Their account email.
- Licence or order information.
- Operating-system details.
- Application version.
- Screenshots or error messages.
- Diagnostic information relevant to the problem.
Users should not send passwords, payment-card details or unnecessary confidential screenplay content.
Support response times may vary according to availability, complexity and the user’s plan.
20. Intellectual Property
Paper Bark and its related intellectual property belong to Paper Bark or its licensors.
This includes, where applicable:
- Software code.
- Website content.
- User-interface design.
- Logos and trademarks.
- Product names.
- Documentation.
- Graphics and animations.
- Promotional materials.
- Proprietary formats and technical systems.
No ownership rights are transferred to the user except for the limited licence expressly granted under these Terms.
“Paper Bark” and associated branding may not be used in a way that falsely suggests sponsorship, partnership or endorsement.
21. Feedback
Users may voluntarily provide feedback, ideas or feature suggestions.
Providing feedback does not transfer ownership of the user’s screenplay or creative content.
You permit us to use general product feedback without restriction or compensation, provided that we do not publicly identify you or disclose confidential content without permission.
22. Prohibited Conduct
Users must not use Paper Bark or its services to:
- Gain unauthorised access to another user’s account or data.
- Upload malware or harmful code.
- Abuse, attack or disrupt the service.
- Test system vulnerabilities without written authorisation.
- Commit fraud or evade payment.
- Share or sell unauthorised licence access.
- Store content that is unlawful to possess or distribute.
- Infringe the intellectual-property or privacy rights of others.
- Use cloud services beyond reasonable technical limits in a way that harms other users.
We may investigate suspected misuse and take proportionate action.
23. Suspension and Termination
We may suspend or terminate an account or licence where reasonably necessary because of:
- Material violation of these Terms.
- Fraudulent or unauthorised payment activity.
- Licence sharing, resale or circumvention.
- Security risks.
- Unlawful use.
- Serious or repeated abuse of Paper Bark services.
- A legal or regulatory requirement.
Where appropriate and reasonably possible, we will provide notice and an opportunity to correct the violation.
A user may stop using Paper Bark at any time and may request account closure through the available account process or by contacting us.
Termination does not automatically create a refund entitlement.
24. Effect of Expiry or Termination
When a trial, licence or subscription expires or is terminated:
- Access to paid features may end.
- Cloud synchronisation and restoration may stop.
- The application may request renewal or reactivation.
- Users should export and back up their projects before access ends.
- Local files may remain on the device, subject to application functionality and file compatibility.
- Cloud data may be deleted according to the Privacy Policy and applicable retention schedule.
Users must stop using the software where the licence has been cancelled following a full refund or termination for serious misuse.
25. Refunds and Withdrawal Rights
Refunds, cancellations and statutory withdrawal rights are governed by the Paper Bark Refund and Returns Policy and applicable law.
Nothing in these Terms removes or limits mandatory consumer rights.
EU consumers may have withdrawal rights for distance contracts, although exceptions can apply when digital content is supplied immediately after the consumer’s express consent and acknowledgement. Rights and remedies also apply when digital content or services fail to conform to the contract.
26. Conformity of Digital Content and Services
Paper Bark will be supplied with the characteristics and functionality described at the time of purchase.
Where Paper Bark does not conform to the applicable contract, consumers may be entitled to remedies under applicable law, which may include:
- Bringing the software or service into conformity.
- A proportionate price reduction.
- Ending the contract.
- A refund where legally applicable.
Any contractual warranty or limitation in these Terms operates in addition to, and does not replace, mandatory statutory rights.
27. Disclaimer
Paper Bark is a writing and formatting tool.
We do not guarantee that:
- A screenplay will be sold, produced or financed.
- A screenplay will meet the requirements of every producer, studio, competition or educational institution.
- Use of the software will produce any particular creative or commercial outcome.
- Every exported document will be accepted by every third party.
- Cloud or internet services will always be uninterrupted.
Users remain responsible for reviewing their scripts, exports, formatting, submissions and backups.
Nothing in this section excludes a warranty or obligation that cannot legally be excluded.
28. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Paper Bark will not be responsible for indirect or consequential losses that were not reasonably foreseeable when the contract was entered into.
Paper Bark’s liability will not be excluded or limited where exclusion would be unlawful, including where applicable for:
- Fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.
- Intentional misconduct or gross negligence.
- Death or personal injury caused by negligence.
- Breach of mandatory consumer rights.
- Any other liability that cannot legally be excluded.
For business users, and only where legally permitted, our total contractual liability may be limited to the amount paid by the business user for Paper Bark during the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the claim.
The business-user limitation does not apply to consumers where it would restrict mandatory consumer protections.
29. Third-Party Services
Paper Bark may depend on third-party services, including:
- Payment processors.
- Cloud-hosting providers.
- Email-delivery providers.
- Authentication services.
- Website and analytics providers.
- Operating-system components.
Use of some third-party services may also be subject to their own terms and privacy policies.
We remain responsible for our obligations under applicable law and cannot avoid mandatory responsibility merely by using a third-party provider.
30. Changes to the Software
Paper Bark may be improved, redesigned or updated over time.
We may add, modify or discontinue features where reasonably necessary for:
- Product development.
- Security.
- Technical compatibility.
- Legal compliance.
- Service reliability.
- Replacement by equivalent or improved functionality.
Material changes affecting an active paid subscription will be communicated where required by law.
31. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms to reflect:
- Changes to Paper Bark.
- New features or services.
- Changes in payment or licensing arrangements.
- Security requirements.
- Legal or regulatory obligations.
- Clarifications or corrections.
The updated Terms will be published with a revised “Last updated” date.
Where a change materially affects an active subscription, we will provide reasonable advance notice where required and explain any cancellation rights available to the user.
Changes will not retroactively remove rights that have already arisen.
32. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Czech Republic, provided that this does not deprive a consumer of mandatory protections available under the laws of their country of habitual residence.
Consumers may bring claims in the courts available to them under applicable consumer and jurisdiction rules.
For disputes involving business users, the competent courts may be those located at the operator’s registered office, where legally permitted.
33. Consumer Complaints and Alternative Dispute Resolution
Customers should first contact Paper Bark at:
Email: info@paperbark.eu
We will attempt to resolve complaints directly and within a reasonable period.
Where Paper Bark is legally established in the Czech Republic and the dispute falls within its competence, consumers may be entitled to request alternative dispute resolution through the Czech Trade Inspection Authority.

The former EU Online Dispute Resolution platform should not be included in your policy because it was discontinued in 2025. The European Commission now directs consumers to national dispute-resolution bodies.
34. Assignment
Users may not transfer their account or licence without prior written permission, except where applicable law gives them that right.
We may transfer our rights and obligations as part of a restructuring, merger, sale or transfer of the Paper Bark business, provided that this does not reduce users’ mandatory rights.
35. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue to apply.
The invalid provision will be interpreted or replaced, where legally possible, in a manner that most closely reflects its original lawful purpose.
36. No Waiver
Failure to enforce a provision immediately does not mean that we waive the right to enforce it later.
37. Entire Agreement
These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, Refund and Returns Policy, checkout information and any plan-specific conditions, form the agreement between Paper Bark and the user concerning the software and related services.
Where plan-specific terms conflict with these general Terms, the more specific terms will apply to that feature or purchase, subject to mandatory law.
